Profiles
Pipe Major Matthew Rigby After a five year break from the pipes to study and further his career,
Matthew resumed playing with the Queensland Police Pipes & Drums in 1997. He was
Pipe Sergeant of the Band when the competed in the 2001 World Pipe Band
Championships, in Glasgow, Scotland. Matthew became Pipe Major of St Andrew’s Pipe Band in 2002, and during his
tenure, the Band has won NSW and Queensland Championships in their grade. The
Band plays many of Matthew’s original compositions in its competition and
concert sets. As a solo piper, Matthew won the 1998 AOM Trophy, receiving a trip to France
and Scotland to compete. Joe has also been actively involved in the teaching scene in Queensland, influencing the progress of a number of young pipers over the years. Joe became Pipe Major of St Andrew’s Pipe Band in 1991, presiding over the Band during the last musical revolution in pipe bands. Joe’s composition talents developed during this time, and the Band still plays some of his works. Joe handed the reins to Matthew Rigby in 2002. Joe remains an integral part of the Band’s pipe corps in his role as Pipe Sergeant. Drum Sergeant Steven Stanley As he moved through the ranks in Scotland, success seemed to follow the Band’s in which Steven played. Before leaving Scotland, Steven had most recently played with the Scottish Gas and Lothian and Borders Pipe Bands. Steven relocated to Australia in 1999, joining the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums, where he continues to be employed. He travelled back to Scotland with the Band in 2001 for the World Pipe Band Championships. Steven joined St Andrew’s Pipe Band in 2002, becoming Drum Sergeant the same year. Steven’s relentless dedication is delivering great results for the drum corps.
